Sunday’s NBA Fantasy Basketball Daily Draft Handicapping Picks (3/7/10)

Just as we warned yesterday, there was a star with a surprise DNP who got some rest.  And it was the biggest star of them all, LeBron James.  This is really going to be a growing problem as the NBA season winds down toward the playoffs.  It might be wise to start scaling back the daily wagering on fantasy basketball and focus more on daily fantasy baseball betting that starts in less than a month.  I’ll still be posting the daily NBA picks, but I’d recommend scaling down the dollar amounts wagered in the last month.  Sunday’s schedule is thin and the first game is at 12:00, so get your rosters in early.   Here are today’s recommendations:

POINT GUARD:

  • In the bargain bin we have Jrue Holiday at near minimum salary.  He’ll get big minutes and makes a great roster filler if you want to spend your salary at another position.
  • Aaron Brooks could be a nice play today with Rodney Stuckey out.  Brooks is inconsistent though and a little on the expensive side, but the PG board is really thin today with only 6 NBA games.
  • Rajon Rondo is probably a better play than Brooks, but he’s also a little more expensive.  He’s got a good matchup against the Wizards.
  • Avoid Rodney Stuckey (injury), Ty Lawson (shoulder) and Chauncey Billups (banged up)

SHOOTING GUARD:

  • There are several good mid-priced players on the SG board today.  Lou Williams has been playing well and has a good matchup with Toronto.
  • Richard Hamilton has been hot and will be called on to pick up the extra scoring with Rodney Stuckey out.  Hamilton is problably my favorite SG play today.
  • Vince Carter is also mid-priced, but he’s got a really bad matchup against the Lakers.
  • If you feel lucky, you could also roll the dice on Ben Gordon.  He could have a decent game with Stuckey out.
  • Avoid Trevor Ariza (hip)

SMALL FORWARD:

  • Andray Blatche has been one of my favorite low priced plays, but I can’t recommend him today.  He had a poor game in his last one and he gets a tough matchup with the Celtics today.  Avoid him.
  • Andre Iguodala is upper-middle priced, but has a good matchup against Toronto.
  • It’s probably a good idea to go with quality at the SF spot today and there is no better player than Kevin Durant, who has a favorable matchup against Sacramento.
  • I’d avoid spending the high salary on Carmelo Anthony today.  Portland can slow the game and play some good defense and I’m not sure Melo will earn his lofty salary against them.
  • Avoid Paul Pierce (thumb), Hedo Turkoglu (banged up), Ron Artest (finger), Al Thornton (bad matchup)

POWER FORWARD:

  • Jeff Green is usually a solid play and has a good matchup against Sacramento.
  • Carl Landry has been steady and has a good matchup with a weakish Oklahoma City interior.
  • Luis Scola exploded, as we recommended,  last night with Al Jefferson out of the lineup and he gets a Detroit matchup today who will likely be without Ben Wallace.  Keep riding Scola.
  • Nene could have a nice game with Kenyon Martin out.  He could pick up extra boards.
  • I don’t like Pau Gasol against the Magic.  Gasol’s salary is just to high to justify playing this tough matchup.
  • LaMarcus Aldridge is a good play at Denver, especially with Kenyon Martin out for the Nuggets.
  • Avoid Kenyon Martin (knee), Chris Bosh (ankle), Elton Brand.

CENTER:

  • JaVale McGee is the the same situation as Andray Blatche, usually a good low salary play, but not so much today because of a matchup with the Celtics.
  • Serge Ibaka is a nice minimum salary roster filler if you want to go with that strategy at center.
  • The center spot is very weak today, so if you have the money you might want to reach for Dwight Howard.  His matchup isn’t great against the Lakers, but every other center is pretty poor.
  • Andrew Bynum has to match up against Howard, avoid Bynum.
  • Marcus Camby is still hurting, avoid him.
  • Andrea Bargnani got three staples in the back of his head in the last game, probably avoid him too.
  • Spencer Hawes is, well, Spencer Hawes.  Avoid.
  • Samuel Dalembert could be a nice mid-priced play, but he’s just so inconsistent.  But with the slim choices at center, he may be worth the gamble if you don’t want to pay up for Dwight Howard.
